There are many reasons to go to El
Salvador and explore the sites and scenery but many people think
its dangerous to go there. Just remind them the war has been
over for more than a decade. There is plenty of fun and exciting
things to do in El Salvador such as surfing, hiking, and all the
museums to explore. Anyone visiting El Salvador will most likely
return with photos of cloud forests in Parque Nacional
Montecristo- El Trifino or the moonscape from the top of Volcan
San Miguel. Visitors could even learn how to surf on the best
waves in Central America in La Libertad. Visitors can even take
a hiking tour through Perquin as a tour guide tells stories
about the war that are combined emotions of being terrified,
thrilling, boring, inspiring, confusing, and sad. There is even
a place to experience eco-tourism at its best.
As much as 10,000 years ago El Salvador was
inhabited by Paleo-Indian peoples. The paintings from them can still
be seen and marveled at in caves that are just outside of the towns
of Corinto and Cacaopera which are in Morazan. In about 2000 BC
there were the Olmecs that were the first ones who were advanced
Meso American civilization that lived in the present day El
Salvador. This is told by a sculpture of a giant head that was found
near Casa Blanca in the western part of El Salvador and is called
the "Olmec Boulder." El Salvador was actually a very significant
trading center and there are archaeological remains that show
evidence of many influences which include Teotihuacan and Pipil
Mayan. The Spanish arrived during the 16th century and the country
was then dominated by the Pipils. The Pipils called the land
Cuscatlan which means Land of Jewels, then their capital was built
and is now known as Antiguo Cuscatlan which sits right outside of
San Salvador.
El Salvador's climate is tropical with usually
only two seasons which are verano which means dry season and
invierno which means wet season. The dry season takes place from
November to April and the wet season is from May to October. Most
people like to visit El Salvador in the beginning or end of dry
season, this is due to the fact that it won't rain everyday and the
roads are in good shape. This is also so that they miss the holidays
so the prices aren't so high and it's not so packed. The hottest
spots in the country are along the coast line and the coolest areas
are in the mountains. El Salvador has broad valleys, black
sand beaches, stories that are told with laughs, colonial churches
and much more.

Attractions in El Salvador
La Puerta del Diablo is located one
mile from the Southern Balboa Park in El Salvador. This
attraction is also known as the Devil's Door and consist of two
huge majestic rock formations with an opening. From the top of
these rock formations visitors can see a panoramic view of the
country. This is one of the reasons this has become one of the
tourists point of interest. It all started in 1762 when a strong
storm created the rock formations that is now known as the
Devil's Door. These two rock formations cut the mountain of
Cerro del Chulo and they appear to be just as big as a giant
open door that shows the Pacific coast, Lake Ilopango, San
Vicente Volcano, and the Cerro de las Pravas behind.
Cathedral Metropolitana in El Salvador is a
principal of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Salvador. The
church has been visited twice by Pope John Paul II and he said the
cathedral was "intimately allied with the joys and hopes of the
Salvadoran people." This cathedral sits on the site where the old
Temple of Santo Domingo once was placed. There was a bigger toll
that was taken when the funeral of Archbishop Romero was taking
place on Palm Sunday, March 31, 1980, 44 people were killed during a
stampede. It was said to be members of security forces that fired on
mourners/worshippers at Romero's funeral but the gunmen were never
identified. This cathedral was finally completed and inaugurated on
March 19, 1999 and there was a festive tiled facade by the
Salvadoran master named Fernando Llort. There are eight beautiful
paintings that show the scenes from the life of Christ that surround
the main altar inside of the church.
The Joya de Ceren Archaeological Site in El
Salvador was known as a pre-Hispanic farming community that was
covered under the eruption of the Laguna Caldera volcano c which was
in AD 600. Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy were the same. Due to
the prodigious condition of the remains, there is some insight
on how the daily lives of the Central American populations were at
the time. Although the buildings are important, the
paleoethnobotanical remains are even more important. Most of the
plant material was preserved due to the low temperature of the wet
ash from Loma Caldera along with the rapid fall. This was the first
time manioc cultivation had ever been found at a New World site.
This site was discovered in 1976 by Payson Sheets who was a
professor of anthropology. There were no bodies found in the rummage
but there were utensils, ceramics, furniture, and half eaten food
found.
San Andres in El Salvador is also a
pre-Hispanic site that began somewhere around the year 900 BC, it
was an agricultural town located in the valley of Zapotitan which
was in the department of La Libertad. San Andres was vacated by the
year 250 due to the eruption of the caldera of Lago Ilopango but was
then occupied again in the 5th century. There wasn't much study or
investigation to the residential area but it was revealed that it
was divided into the South seat and the North seat. The South Seat
was filled with adobe in the year 600 so it could construct the
Acropolis. On the South and East ends are pyramids or structures
numbered 1 through 4, 1 being the main pyramid. Then the site was
buried because of the eruption of the Playon volcano in 1658 AD and
it preserved the Colonial indigo production. Then in 1996 the
government of El Salvador established the Archaeological Park of San
Andres, here visitors can climb on the pyramids, visit the museum,
and see the indigo production area.
